Cheese Sheet Mask
I am engaged in a constant and discerning fellowship with the objects in my surroundings. I question: how do I interact and react to these objects and their environments, and how do others? These are questions I ask myself on a daily basis. This Socratic line of inquiry with my material surroundings is the key to my creative process. I am always in search for disruption among the mundane facets of everyday life: disorder among order.
In my work I invite the audience to question how culture and consumption cause disruption in our everyday lives. I hope that my work provokes an examination of what we buy and how we use it. Permanent eyelash extensions and face sheet masks are Millennial rituals of our consumptive evolution. Snail excretion as self care. Kraft singles (Cheese Sheet Mask) as placebo skincare. The act of adhering fake eyelashes is made permanent— an uplifting ritual of self-modification. The ritual is in concert with the performance. In Eyelash Lampshade I combine the performative ceremony with the ordinary environment, personifying the object. The domestic space asks to be changed. Your mirror speaks back, (Mirror) and your pillows poke and prod (Cuddle Creatures). In Sag and Triptych Sag, our innermost anxieties and fluids are organized like our other more material possessions, hanging as ordinarily as a coat or scarf
